In the Beginning…

12/4/2020
Initially this blog should have come out March 2019  but if you are an over-thinker like myself who may suffer from a little bit of an imposter syndrome like myself, then you can understand why I pushed back the debut of this blog. Besides, I wanted to wait till I could discuss current affairs that relates to you, dearly beloved readers.
The debut of the blog would have been during the Nigerian election period, in February 2019 when I was undergoing my Nigerian Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Thereafter, I participated in some political campaigns and the experiences was eye-opening to say the least. But, we will have to discuss that in the next blog entry.
Now, I want to  talk about the News affecting every single one in the world now.
COVID-19: Corona Virus AKA the kill joy.
”Corona viruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The common signs  include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Some corona viruses can be transmitted from person to person, usually after close contact with an infected patient, for example, in a household or workplace.”
As public affairs is my passion and profession, I have a duty to inform and discuss it with you.
             Much Ado About Corona Virus.
I hate it. I hate that it has taken my time, my life, my finances. It is the only non-tangible pandemic my generation (millennials and Generation X)  has witnessed that has stalled the stock market, cancelled flights worldwide, made people redundant, toppled hospital beds and triggered selfishness in humanity.
The death toll is high enough to make your heart skip a beat as  your knees tremble, with over a million cases worldwide of the Corona virus, the unknown eradication of the date of this virus has caused couples to cancel weddings, sports events and global seminars. Parents have run out of ideas to keep their children entertained inside their homes. Supermarkets  are resembling battlefields as people wrestle for the last crate of eggs. Freedom of movement has become a luxury, unless you are an essential worker. Every sound of a sneeze or cough has people running away from you like you are the virus itself.
I hate it here.
Is this a blessing in disguise?
I can learn to love this time of total self isolation. I mean, I love that I am now compelled to make the first phone call to keep up with loved ones now, as I have no excuse. The Internet has become a saving grace in this period of social distancing to socialise with people.
I love seeing innovative ways of humans bonding together online; parents  participating in dance challenges, employees having ‘ Friday drinks’ on Zoom, couples having date night via Skype, entrepreneurs…well they are  always online anyway. Also, I love that I have been forced to take time to think without the noise of work. It feels like a time for the world to just pause and really recognize what is important to them in life; what are you really chasing in life and how does it in paint your identity?
I am not saying this is a time to show who is the most productive, we are living in a pandemic, everyone is just trying to survive now. Yet, it is a time to think about who you are and your place in society in the bigger picture.
Now,with the emergence of a pandemic invading lives, health experts tell us that everyone– young, old, rich and poor must make an effort to ” stay safe“, to save lives. Which means by virtue of your existence you can save a life by staying at home!
But there’s another side to it. The natural instinct during a human crisis is to feel sympathy or empathy for others, which spurs you into action to help others. Yet,  because of the nature of this virus you cannot even  do that. As a result, I started thinking of how I can help from the confines of my room. Therein lies the the blessing! Showing up for everyone as much as you can, but as far away as possible.
How? I hear you ask. You can send money through banking Apps to orphanages who will need the extra money these next few months. You can call an old friend and keep them company for a few hours. You should pay your employees in advance. You could cancel rent payments form tenants for the next two months. You can send a colleague a job advert so they can work from home too. You can leave a space in the garage from an exhausted health worker working all night. You can still help, even though you are far. I hope you see where I am going with this…Yes, you can think about your self but how can you affect other people’s lives too?
When can we go outside and play?
As of today, health officials still cannot predict how or when this virus will leave the world. All we can do is reduce the spread by STAYING AT HOME. Just stop moving, then it wont touch you and you won’t spread it to the next person. The faster we contain it, get people checked and effectively cure each patient, the quicker we can  eradicate it. Then we can all go back outside and play. This is the time for humanity to work together to beat it; your actions the next few weeks determines if I will stay alive. This sounds extreme but that is the reality. Many people have contracted the virus  from just a single handshake that was made in the United Kingdom, which has travelled down to someone in Lagos who uses the same hand to touch someone else. I shiver at the thought. Every touch or ,movement you make can potentially spread this virus so we must follow the instructions to contain this virus.
Below are verified links displaying how you can  obey the rules.
I think we can beat this, will you contribute?
